Robscherer123 is a game developer who actively develops games, he's been in the industry for over 6 years. Here's my interview with him. Enjoy :P
What inspired you to start creating games?
I’d always liked video games growing up, and my original plan wasn’t to be creating games. I went to college for web and interactive design. On the side, I took what knowledge I’d gained from that and used it for trying to create a flash game. After successfully creating my first game, I’d found a market for selling game with ads in them. Then after selling my first game for a nice chunk of cash, I realized that making games fit really well into what I enjoy doing. That is, creating things that entertain people through my art and technical skills.
What is one thing that you do really well that struggling developers don't do?
The one thing that I do really well that I feel other indie developers may struggle with is finding financial security in my job. Having my MMO Helmet Heroes allows for a steady stream of money from players consistently buying virtual goods. Being an indie developer it can be a bit hard making money game from game, hoping that players find your game as interesting as you did and making enough money from it can be hard.
Tell me about the scariest moment in your career so far?
It’s hard to pin-point a scariest moment but if I had to pick I’d say a few years ago when the market for selling flash games for sponsorships began to get a bit tougher. Making money and selling my games got harder and wasn’t looking as viable to make a living off of. That’s when I turned to making my flash MMO and selling in-game items as a new business model.
What's your biggest goal as a developer?
Ideally my goals would be to grow my game and business as large as possible and expand past just games themselves. If I could expand my Helmet Heroes franchise into toys, board games, cartoon shows, etc that would be the best. It’s a long shot, but you have to aim high! My goal is to make money creating things I enjoy, so making indie games and such is the perfect outlet. As long as I can continue to do that in 5 years but on an even larger scale, I would be happy.
What's holding you back from creating an even bigger impact?
What’s holding me back? Definitely time and man power. I have no many ideas, so much content, and things I would like to add to my game and create but I simply can’t do it fast enough by myself. If I could split myself into 5 different people, that’d be perfect! haha. Some point in the future I’d like to get more of a team, but that costs money and would take a lot of planning to get things running efficiently with more people.
